“Suspended” is a piece of wood sculpture crafted through the use of woodshop machines. The concept for the sculpture centers around the definition of “suspend.” The definition of suspend is to “temporarily prevent from continuing or being in force or effect,” which in this case is prevention of the gavel hitting the block. Therefore, preventing the object from continuing its function. 

There is also a second layer of meaning, which was inspired by court cases where people were falsely accused and sent to prison. Usually when the judge hits the gavel, it signifies the decision of guilt is finalized. However, since the gavel can’t hit the sounding block, which “suspends” the decision.
